Becomiing ASA Certified is just the beginning...

We give you the knowledge and experience to be confident and safe on all your sailing adventures – whether you charter a boat from a local harbor, go on an exotic sailing vacation, or even buy your own boat.

Each certification requires participants to fully satisfy both knowledge and skills standards, which will be verified through a written exam and an on-the-water practical exam. Chronic Sailing’s Cap. Shawn is a certified ASA instructor for the basic keelboat course all the way through advanced offshore cruising, as well as the multihull certification.

Single Courses

ASA 101

Basic Keelboat Sailing

2.5 Days | $500 per student

Learn to skipper a 20' - 27' sloop-rigged keelboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards.

ASA 103

Basic Coastal Cruising

2.5 Days | $700 per student

Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered 25'-35' keelboat by day in moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, safety and seamanship.

ASA 104

Bareboat Cruising

3 Days | $850 per student

Learn how to sail a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered 30'-45' sailboat during a multi-day cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions. Learn about provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring / mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather, and more.

ASA 105

Coastal Navigation

3 Days | $550 per student

Learn the navigational theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters. On-water coastal navigation skills elements are contained in the ASA103, Basic Coastal Cruising, ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising, and ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising, in progressively increasing levels of detail.

ASA 106

Adv. Coastal Cruising

3 Days | $1,100 per student

Learn to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length in coastal and inland waters, in any conditions, day and night.

ASA 114

Cruising Catamaran

2 Days | $800 per student

Learn to skipper an auxiliary-powered sailing cruising catamaran of approximately 30-45' feet in length during a multi-day live-aboard cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions.

Meet Your Instructor

Captain Shawn has extensive experience teaching solos, couples and families how to operate their vessels safely and enjoyably sail, both inland and in offshore situations. With more than 20,000 nautical miles of offshore yacht deliveries between the Chesapeake Bay and deep into the southern Caribbean Sea, dozens of private charters and ASA certifications, Cap. Shawn has the experience and knowledge of how to keep safe in all situations. He has taught many novice and intermediate sailors the skills and confidence necessary to excel in numerous sailing conditions and situations and can do the same for you.
